Patience is King !

Tonight we thought Finland was the right place to be, but when we got reports from a colleague in front it was overcast all over ... so, I stopped at the border for checking the clouds, and we got some gaps there ... but, not good enough, so we continued 30 km inside the border for taking a break by the frozen border river between Finland and Sweden, and waited for better sky in a hour ...

Since it didn`t happening any better move on the sky, it was only one thing to do; heading back ... but, as I am always telling my guests; "Your chase is not over before you`re back in bed" ...

During our drive towards the border we discover partly clear sky on one of our private Aurora cameras down in Skibotndalen valley, so we headed that way and I stopped first further up in the valley where we got to see the first stars and little faint Aurora.

Then the sky got even better when I did a 2nd stop further down in the valley ... nothing green was showed on the camera, so I told my guests I gave it 15 mins ... but, it was impossible to leave when I got little green on my camera on the south sky = which means good activity can be on the way.

It started slowly between the clouds, and then it got more and wider into the west sky where it was less clouds, so it was nice to get this final show after a very long chase with not so much to see ...

It`s not often we`re leaving Skibotn at 2.30 am ...

April 4th - Private Aurora Chase Dinner
People around the camp fire in the mountain valley under the sky of moon lit clouds

  • Guests / Country: 4 guests from Austria.
  • Weather Tromsø: Cloudy.
  • Deastination / weather: Dividalen / clear / part clear / cloudy.
  • Aurora activity: 3/10.
  • Aurora show: Couple of stripes far south-east, spikes and curls.
  • Visible for the naked eyes: Green.
  • Tour km: 270.
  • Tour hrs: 7,5.
  • Wildlife: 3+1 moose.

It`s pity ... we missed the best Aurora show the last month ...

The conditions was perfect when we arrived the valley just before 9 pm, the sky was 95% clear ... and only 30 minutes later while I set up my kitchen and lit the camp fire, tonight show started low on the south-east sky on blue sky ...

But, then suddenly the clouds begin to come in from south-west ... first slowly, then fast and it got totally overcast, just a few minutes before the really great show started at 10.30 pm ...

I served the dinner, then I begin to check the conditions at sky cameras further east, and it looks better, so I decided me for leave after a chat with the guests about what they thought ... but, when we came closer I had a chat with a colleague who said the clouds had arrived all over ...

So, tonight I should make the chase longer into Finnish Lapland where they sky was clear longest ...
