December 20th

- Aurora Chase with Guide Andreas.
- Guests / Country: 16 guests from South Korea, Ireland, Hong Kong, China and UK.
- Weather Tromsø: Rainy and gloomy.
- Destination / weather: Storfjord – Hatteng – Finnish border / partly clear, shifting up to ~90% clear, clouds coming and going.
- Aurora activity: 3/10.
- Aurora show: White–grey streaks and lines stretching west to east across the sky, some fast-changing movement and denser motion low in the northwest, but lacking power.
- Visible for the naked eyes: White–greyish lines across the sky.
- Tour km: 400.
- Tour hrs: 8,5.
It was rainy and heavy clouds in Tromsø, but as we drove towards Storfjord and Hatteng the sky gradually opened up. We had a nice early stop by the sea, though aurora activity was limited at first with little light.
As clouds moved back in, we decided to continue toward the Finnish border. The aurora remained moderate, with streaks and lines appearing across different parts of the sky and changing fairly quickly, even if the overall intensity stayed low.
The evening was a bit eventful, with some unnecessary interruptions related to private parking areas, but everything was handled and the tour continued as planned. We ended up having a good stop by the fire near the Finnish border, which rounded off the night nicely.
We returned to Tromsø around 02:30–02:45 after an exciting and varied evening on the road.
December 18th - Private Aurora Chase

- Aurora Chase with Guide Andreas.
- Guests / Country: 4 guests from USA.
- Weather Tromsø: Cloudy.
- Destination / weather: Skogsvannet (frozen lake) – GuideGunnar’s beach / mostly cloudy, small gaps.
- Aurora activity: 2/10.
- Aurora show: Very weak activity, with occasional faint aurora appearing briefly through cloud gaps.
- Visible for the naked eyes: Barely visible, faint and intermittent.
- Tour km: 210.
- Tour hrs: 6,5.
It was an unfortunate evening weather-wise, with a lot of cloud cover throughout the night. At Skogsvannet lake we still had a great time out on the frozen lake, enjoying the surroundings and having some fun on the ice while waiting for any activity.
We later moved toward GuideGunnar’s beach, where we had a beautiful view. Some stars appeared at times, giving hope for clearer conditions, but neither the weather nor the aurora fully opened up.
Even though the aurora stayed very limited, it was still an eventful and enjoyable night with a great private group.
December 16th - Private Aurora Chase Dinner

- Guests / Country: 4 guests from Indonesia.
- Weather Tromsø: Cloudy.
- Destination / weather: Skibotndalen valley / part clear.
- Aurora activity: 6/10.
- Aurora show: All over and towards south, curls, spikes and dancing curtains.
- Visible for the naked eyes: Bright green and faint pink.
- Tour km: 245.
- Tour hrs: 6,5.
The first plan was to drive far into Finnish Lapland, but when we arrived the valley east of the Lyngen Alps, the sky was already good enough ... so, I gambled little to just stop there, since this location suddenly can get overcast ... and it did shortly after I had set up my kitchen and lit the fire ...
But, as I know very well, it`s changing rapidly here, and short time after the activity was building up on the SE sky in between the clouds, then the sky got super clear and my guests and I got a very good Aurora show.
The tricky thing to just stop there at this huge parking, is a place where the big buses are stopping too, which I don`t like ... since too many people on one spot is `human pollution` in the nature ... but, we was lucky; One big bus arrived, but they continued, probably cause I had occupate the north side ... and then a truck came, but also this one left ...
Finally a minibus arrived, but they stopped at the other side of the parking slot, so ...
After shooting a lot of Aurora pics, including many pics of my guests, it was time to prepare the dinner, and tonight`s Menu: Reindeer stew with rice.
And of course, Lady Aurora didn`t show respect during my dinner moment, so she was quite active during the dinner too.
My guests was happy early, so we returned already at 11 pm ...
December 14th

- Aurora Chase with Guide Andreas.
- Guests / Country: 6 guests from Taiwan, India, UK and USA.
- Weather Tromsø: Cloudy.
- Destination / weather: West side of Skogsfjellvegen / frozen lake / clearing from east to west.
- Aurora activity: 4/10.
- Aurora show: Long-lasting arcs and lines, gradually increasing in strength. Two main bands rose from the west, passed overhead, and split into two belts. Later, several beams and softer, calmer curves appeared.
- Visible for the naked eyes: Green.
- Tour km: 200.
- Tour hrs: 7,5.
The evening started very cloudy, and both the forecast and aurora activity suggested that the first real opportunity would not come until around 22:30–23:00. With no meaningful activity expected earlier, we delayed the start and departed Tromsø at 20:00, avoiding unnecessary waiting under overcast skies.
After a short stop, we reached our planned location on the west side of Skogsfjellvegen around 22:30, parking next to a frozen lake. As expected, the cloud cover slowly cleared following the east-to-west pattern. Gradually, faint aurora appeared in the northwest and continued to build in strength.
The display developed into two clear bands rising from the west, passing over the treetops, and splitting into two belts above us. This was followed by bursts of beams, then later calmer and more delicate curves. The aurora was not particularly fast or intense, but it stayed with us for a long time and was clearly visible to the naked eye.
Later in the night, conditions were perfect for star photography, as we were just coming off the peak of the moon cycle. The atmosphere was soft and calm, typical for this mild December period known locally as kakelinna. Overall, it was a balanced and beautiful night — not extreme, but very rewarding in terms of scenery, duration, and experience.
December 12th

- Aurora Chase with Guide Andreas.
- Guests / Country: 4 guests from Germany.
- Weather Tromsø: Part cloudy.
- Destination / weather: Laksvatn / Signaldal (mountain views) / Hatteng (sea view) / part clear.
- Aurora activity: 9/10.
- Aurora show: Long-lasting arcs, strong lines, fast movements, curls, and activity across multiple parts of the sky. A rich and varied display throughout the night..
- Visible for the naked eyes: Green with hints of warmer hues.
- Tour km: 210.
- Tour hrs: 6,5.
We started the evening with partly cloudy skies in Tromsø and headed toward Laksvatn in Balsfjord, where conditions were already improving. From there, we continued to Signaldal to gain a wider mountain perspective before later moving down to Hatteng by the sea for open horizons and reflections.
The aurora delivered from early on and stayed active for a long time. We were treated to strong arc lines, fast-moving structures, curls, and repeated intensifications across different parts of the sky. The activity was constant and dynamic, making it one of those nights where you simply feel spoiled by the northern lights.
The aurora was clearly visible to the naked eye, with strong green movements and occasional hints of warmer tones. Along the way, we had great conversations, a fantastic group atmosphere, and even tried a few new and creative photo poses we hadn’t done before.
All in all, it was a complete night — great people, smooth logistics, and an outstanding aurora show. One of those evenings that leaves everyone smiling on the way back.
December 10th - Private Aurora Chase Dinner

- Guests / Country: 6 guests from Germany.
- Weather Tromsø: Clear.
- Destination / weather: Bjørnskar, Ringvassøya island / clear.
- Aurora activity: 9/10.
- Aurora show: All over and far south, curls, spikes and dancing curtains. Intense pink dancing.
- Visible for the naked eyes: Green and pink.
- Tour km: 85.
- Tour hrs: 8. (1,5 hours in a queue for an accident).
- Wildlife: 2+1+1 reindeers.
It was a easy choice to where we should drive tonight ... with a cruise ship in the harbour, then it was extra many buses out, so then we drove straight 40 km north to my own beach where we could be in peace.
And also a logistic choice, cause the dinner chase have a lot of quipment which I could leave at my home, since I should park the bus at my guide partner after the chase.
Lady Aurora was already active early in the afternoon from 2 pm, but she took a break when we drove out, so while I prepare my outdoor kitchen my guests strolled out on the beach until the Aurora activity builded up again, and I shot my pics too, many of my guests.
And while I served the dinner; A vegetable dish for two and my special reindeer stew for four, then Lady Aurora was really back with a great show, and during the dessert she became crazy.
It`s always great to see her dancing wild and pink ;)
Just before midnight we returned, and I thought I should get an "early" evening back home, but 15 km from the city a 50 seats Aurora bus had made a wrong decision when they should leave a tiny parking slot, and had landed with the back tyres in the ditch ... so, the road was blocked ...
I get home not before at 4.30 am.
December 7th

- Guests / Country: 6 guests from Italy and UK.
- Weather Tromsø: Cloudy.
- Destination / weather: Skogsfjordelva river / Dåfjord / part clear / haze.
- Aurora activity: 0/10.
- Aurora show: No activity !
- Visible for the naked eyes: Nothing !
- Tour km: 180.
- Tour hrs: 6,5.
- Wildlife: One slowly walking reindeer along the road.
After a lovely clear day a cloud front came in from south, so tonight it was only one thing to do; Head as far north we could, where we stopped at a `salmon fisher shelter` by the river where my guests could relax in front of the camp fire I lit.
And the patience work began ... since there was no sign of any activity, and the Bz was far on the plus side ...
The sky was better than I thought with haze and a lot of visible stars, but we missed the most important.
Around 10 pm I decided to leave, since it was still no sign of any activity, so we did a back drive for look after moose and reindeer and maybe some Aurora if it came up, but with not so big hope for this this night ... and along the road we met only one slowly walking reindeer, but in the terrain it was thousands of foot print after them ...
So, then you know; Clear sky is not any guarantee for see the Northern Lights !
We did a short detour down to Dåfjord where the clear gap out in the ocean was still there, but nothing ... so we returned early back to the city.
December 6th

- Aurora Chase with Guide Andreas.
- Guests / Country: 4 guests from France and India.
- Weather Tromsø: Cloudy.
- Destination / weather: Hazy > improving.
- Aurora activity: 3/10.
- Aurora show: Faint curves and soft structures early on. Later, faster curls and movement both to the north and south. A final curling line over the sea with a subtle reflection.
- Visible for the naked eyes: Faint green.
- Tour km: 200.
- Tour hrs: 7.
Tromsø was completely clouded over at departure, and there were no obvious better options nearby, so we headed toward Dåfjord where the forecast suggested gradual improvement. On arrival, the sky was still hazy, but it slowly cleared in the most important direction. Early activity stayed hidden behind clouds to the north, but faint aurora appeared around a beautiful moon halo created by the thin cloud layer — subtle, but very atmospheric.
As the sky threatened to close again, I spotted a clearer opening further east and decided to move. The aurora picked up faster than expected, but we managed to relocate to the east side of Ringvassøy, near the sea. Sheltered from streetlights by trees, we found enough darkness to enjoy the show.
Here, we saw quicker movements, curls, and activity both north and south. The full moon reduced intensity, but the dynamics were lively. We ended the night with a curling line stretching over the sea in Kvaløyvågen, with a soft reflection on the water — a calm and satisfying finish to the chase.
December 5th - Private Aurora Chase

- Aurora Chase with Guide Andreas.
- Guests / Country: 9 guests from Singapore.
- Weather Tromsø: Cloudy.
- Destination / weather: Storsteinnes & Balsfjord region / sudden clear openings.
- Aurora activity: 9/10.
- Aurora show: Fast movements, curls, spikes, and long-lasting displays.
- Visible for the naked eyes: Clear green and pink, strong visibility despite full super moon.
- Tour km: 235.
- Tour hrs: 6,5.
Tonight was a perfect example of how unpredictable northern weather can be and why going with an experienced guide makes all the difference. Tromsø was fully covered in heavy clouds, and in Breivikeidet, where I picked up the guests, we had thick “sheep clouds” with only tiny breaks. The forecasts showed no real openings anywhere. But forecasts are not reality — and this is where my local knowledge, 95% success rate, and network of cameras and colleagues come into play.
Using all available tools, I saw something unusual: a solid-looking opening forming far to the south. It wasn’t in any model yet, but the movement looked promising. We headed toward it, and as we got closer, the sky started to open up earlier than expected. The activity began to build, and I kept pushing for better and better sky conditions.
Just before the data and cameras suggested a major aurora burst might be coming, I found a strong and fast-developing clear gap near Storsteinnes — the kind of opening you only catch if you know exactly where to look and how the clouds behave in this region. We grabbed that opportunity immediately, and it paid off. The aurora came in fast, bright, and beautifully active with strong green and clear pink visible to the naked eye.
When the activity calmed, we moved to Nordkjosbotn for a short break, then continued to a good ocean-view location overlooking the Balsfjord. Some favourite spots were taken, but the full super moon was so bright that nearby houses didn’t interfere at all. We had long-lasting, fast movements, curls, spikes, and wide east-to-west flows — a proper Arctic show.
We considered heading to a third location in case of another burst, but the cameras and data didn’t indicate more coming. The kids were tired, everyone was cold but happy, and the night had already delivered far above expectations. We returned the group to Breivikeidet around 00:30.
A fantastic night — and a strong reminder that the difference between missing the lights and standing under a sky full of them often comes down to local knowledge, real-time decision making, and a guide who knows how to navigate constant weather changes. And worth noting: a private chase can sometimes cost roughly the same as joining a shared group when you factor in transport, flexibility, comfort, and personal attention — but with far more freedom and a tailored experience.

December 2nd

- Aurora Chase with Guide Andreas.
- Guests / Country: 4 guests from Germany and UK

- Visible for the naked eyes: White–green tones, curls, quick shapes, pink edges visible despite almost full moon.
- Tour km: 180.
- Tour hrs: 6,5.
We left Tromsø under shifting cloud layers and drove toward Ringvassøya, where the coastal weather opened nicely. The first stop near GuideGunnar’s area gave us good visibility and stable aurora with greens and some pink edges, even with the bright moon.
Conditions stayed clear, so we continued to Dåfjord for a better vantage point. Only a weak northern line appeared there, dropping beautifully toward the sea. A calm but successful night with clear skies and steady activity before returning early to Tromsø.

The third night in row with PINK Aurora dancing ;)
We missed tonight`s first show when we drove out, and then it became quiet on the sky ... so, while my guests went out for a walk, I set up the kitchen and began what I do on this chases; Acting like a chef and prepared the fish stew over open fire.
And then just before I should serve the dinner, Lady Aurora disturb me with a lovely stripe of activity on the south sky ...
To be contuined ...
