  • Wildlife: 10 reindeers.

With incoming clouds from the south it was only one way to drive, towards north, but first we had to make a stop by the airport for shoot some pics of the lovely sunset towards Ersfjorden.

Then we continued towards "my island" Ringvassøya, where we headed to the NW coast where we found a lovely location on a old jetty where we relaxed all evening.

But, it was a long wait for close to nothing, since the good show never arrived, and neither the forecast showed any show in near future, so we returned to the city by midnight ...

Tonight, a film team from ´Hype TV´ from Spain was joining me ;)

My first plan was a beach close to Sommarøy, 50 km west of the city, but since they hadn`t remove the snow from the parking we searched via Sommarøy to Brensholmen for an other place to stay and found a small parking pocket along the main road with no space to stay, so I let the guests play with the snow shovel out in the snow on the marsh, and finally we got a great place to stay and play out in the darkness and silence away from the chaos around ...

It went into a night with a lot of patience, since the Lady was quiet with only some faint spikes towards north and west ...and then the clouds came back ... but, then it`s just smart to stay put and wait and see ... since I got reports from my colleagues further north than it was more cloudy there ...

I was planned to leave at midnight, but my guests didn`t gave up, and just before midnight the activity build up little and the clouds dissapear, so I had to postpone the leave and we got a nice ending after a long time wait ...

March 25th

Tonight, a film team from ´Norddeutscher Rundfunk NDR´ - Germany, joined me ;) It will be shown on NDR at 25.12.2025 !

Third night in row with a lot of colors on the pics ... it`s pity it wasn`t brighter, so we could see it with our naked eyes, but some of my guests did ...

First I was planned for Finland, but after 70 km when we had a toilet break I checked the cameras around, and it was sudenly clear at the coast too, and in Dividalen (85 km away) where I was thinking about to drive to, but the sky camera in Skibotn (60 km) showed clear sky and Aurora, and since the roads are faster that way, I decided to follow the crowds as first planned ...

When we arrived the valley the sky camera showed red Aurora on the south sky, so I drove fast up in the valley and choosed to stop in a small forest road with a lot of forest around, but it was no matter, since all the good Auroras was above us and we had good sight across the road and towards SE where the forest was lower ...

A lot of buses passed us, so I knew it should be too crowded closer to the border, which I also got confirmed of a colleague when he called me ... and they had more clouds than us, so I decided to just stay there, since the sky also got better and better ...

During the time I shot pics of Aurora and my guests, the film team was around me all the time, for get theirs documentary set with filming and interviewing of me.

Later when the activity slowed down little, I set a camp fire into the forest and served hot drinks and local sweet snacks.

Just before midnight we returned back towards the city, but Lady Aurora wasn`t ready, since it came more activity during our drive, but then we was back under the clowdy sky with partly too much snowing ...

When I returned home around 3 am, the sky was partly clear and I got to see little more on blue sky, just a few minutes before the sunrise started ...

March 24th
Colorful Auroras over the snowy mountains

  • Guests / Country: 11 guests from Slovenia, Germany, Australia, China and UK.
  • Weather Tromsø: Cloudy.
  • Deastination / weather: Kattfjordeidet / part clear / clear.
  • Aurora activity: 8/10.
  • Aurora show: All over and far south, curtains, spikes and curls. And a lots of colorful coronas, but all was faint. 3-4 colors on the camera, but only little bright green for the naked eyes.
  • Visible for the naked eyes: Bright green.
  • Tour km: 130.
  • Tour hrs: 6.
  • Wildlife: Two moose and four reindeers.
  • Space show: Several nice shooting stars.

AURORA CORONA BONANZA

Pink, purple, blue, red, yellow and green colors on this amazing serie of Coronas we got with our cameras … just little pity that the show wasn’t bright enough, so my guests and I couldn’t see it with our naked eyes … except bright green for a short moment.

Tonight I first drove the «wrong way» so we missed out the «Sunset Aurora sky» they got at Sommarøy 60 km west, while we did a wildlife chase in the north with 4 reindeer and 2 moose.

The weather forecast showed the sky should clear up all over later, so I headed north … but, I totally missed out it should first clear up in the west …

So, when we reached my home 40 km north, the question was if we should drive all the way back to Sommarøy, which was 2 hours away or wait at the half way, since the weather forecast showed the clear sky should move towards north ...

I decided to return slowly by checking the clouds conditions along the route, but it didn’t got better …so, when we arrived Kattfjordeidet, 25 km west of the city we just had to stop, but we only had clear sky towards SW … the clear hole was active with Aurora, so …

And I was glad I didn’t drove further, since it was totally chaos at Sommarøy with around hundreds Aurora buses, so it was probably impossible to find a spot to stay, without staying in a queue for see the sky and take pictures …

At our location we had a peaceful moment rest of the evening.

Around 11 pm the clouds suddenly disappeared and then tonight’s best show started with this amazing serie of Coronas …

All my guests, except one, was already back in the bus, but I couldn’t leave … Aurora Addicted as I am, since the shapes and colors changed the whole time …

After one hours Aurora Corona shooting the clouds begin to come back, so we returned to the city at 00.30 …

March 23rd - My Chase no. 2,120 ;)
Colorful Aurora over the mountains

  • Guests / Country: 15 guests from Germany, Australia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, China and UK.
  • Weather Tromsø: Part clear.
  • Deastination / weather: Lakselvbukt / clear.
  • Aurora activity: 7/10.
  • Aurora show: All over and far south, curtains, spikes and curls. A small faint corona and little moving.
  • Visible for the naked eyes: Bright green.
  • Tour km: 135.
  • Tour hrs: 6,5.
  • Space show: One nice fireball.

Two nights in row it has been Aurora all over the sky and far south, but the great activity and intense dancing didn`t happened, but of course we have got many lovely pictures with a lot of colors ...

We could do it short tonight and stay on the coast since the sky should clear up later, but I decided to drive little into the country side for stay in peace ... but, along the fjord close to the Lyngen Alps all parking spots was already taken, but thankfully "my place" up in a valley closer to the mountains was available, so we stayed there all evening.

March 22nd
A minibuss and people around the camp fire under the sky of the Northern Lights

  • Guests / Country: 16 guests from Norway, Japan, Hong Kong, India, China and USA.
  • Weather Tromsø: Part clear.
  • Deastination / weather: Kattfjordeidet / Kvalnes / part clear / clear.
  • Aurora activity: 8/10.
  • Aurora show: All over and far south, curls, spikes and dancing curtains. Several faint coronas.
  • Visible for the naked eyes: Green.
  • Tour km: 110.
  • Tour hrs: 6.
  • Wildlife: One moose.

Finally a lovely clear night on the coast, so I decided to head straight west towards our most lovely fjord area, west on the island Kvaløya; Grøtfjord ... but, it was little cloudy in the beginning of the evening, so I decided to take a short break at Kattfjordeidet for see which plans the clouds had ...

And lucky for us that we stopped there, since the first show on blue sky was just around the corner, so we got a nice one with little dancing ;)

After a chat with my colleagues on the spot and others who was on the road towards Grøtfjord, I decided to change my plan and quit the drive west and headed south of the island Kvaløya instead, since it was already packed of buses and rental cars in Grøtfjord ... and cause the high avalanche danger after the mild weather set in, the area could`nt be used all over ...

On our way towards south, we met Mr. Moose along the route, and since my first planned location already was occupied of an another guide, we just had to continue and found a new lovely location with a perfect view over Malangen, mountains of Senja and the fjord Balsfjord towards sout east.

Just a perfect location since all night Aurora show was on the south sky, and it didn`t came towards the north sky just before midnight, but then all my guests was happy, so we returned back to the city.

It was a great night with the Northern Lights, quite massive, but not very strong, and not really dancing and crazy good coronas, but our pics got lovely ... but, after midnight when my guests was back at theirs accommodations it begin to dance ...

March 19th
Three guys in front of a snow hill under the sky of Northern Lights

  • Guests / Country: 12 guests from Germany, Ireland, Taiwan, Philippines, China and UK.
  • Weather Tromsø: Cloudy / snow.
  • Destination / weather: Laksvatn / Beach Skibotn & valley / the Finnish border / part clear / haze / snow.
  • Aurora activity: 7/10.
  • Aurora show: All over and far south, curtains, spikes and curls. A small corona.
  • Visible for the naked eyes: Green / faint pink.
  • Tour km: 295.
  • Tour hrs: 7.

It went in to a little stressed chase tonight and I did a mistake ...

A few km before Skibotn, in Storfjord, I stopped and checked the sky and saw stars, but I "gorgot" to take a picture of the sky, and then especially towards south ... continue to drive and saw on the sky camera in Skibotn that something huge and colorful builded up on the south sky ... but, there was no chance to stop, since we was inside a risky avalanche area ...

When we arrived the first parkings at Skibotn beach it was a totally chaos and buses all over, but I found a small place to stop at the 2nd pocket which I really hate, but I had to give my guests rest of the great show and we got lovely red on our cameras ...

I should turn around in Storfjord and drive back to the bus pocket a few hundreds meter behind before the avalanche area ... it`s pity ... since we then probably could get the start of the show, since that`s normally the best ... and we could enjoy it in peace and silence ...

We continued our drive up in the valley for a new stop along the road, but the clouds came after us, so we headed up towards the border, where we found a quiet spot and got the last stripes of tonight`s show, before the snow arrived ...

Made a camp fire and relaxed with hot drink and sweet local snacks.

Early return before midnight, and it went into a long drive in the "snowstorm" ... did a stop in Balsfjord, where the sky was partly clear with faint Aurora on the south sky, but since there was no sign of any high activity, we continued back to the city.

Finland was the first planned destination, but so far we didn`t came since the weather forecast was totally wrong and gave us clear sky 45 km before the border ...

March 17th
Aurora on the sky over the white snowy mountains

  • Guests / Country: 16 guests from Germany, Italy, Taiwan, China and USA.
  • Weather Tromsø: Cloudy.
  • Destination / weather: Kattfjordeidet / part clear / haze / cloudy.
  • Aurora activity: 6/10.
  • Aurora show: All over and far south, curls, spikes and curtains. A small corona.
  • Visible for the naked eyes: Green.
  • Tour km: 45.
  • Tour hrs: 4.
  • Wildlife: 10-15 reindeers.

Seasons shortest chase, in time and distance to drive.

My first plan was Finland, since the best cloud layer was forecasted there, but just before I should leave the city a colleague who lives on the coast sent me a pics of clear sky 50 km west, so I changed my mind and stayed on the coast instead.

As I told my guests; "It`s better with a 30+30 mins drive and one hour Aurora, than 3+3 hours drive to Finland and 1,5 hours time for Aurora" ... And we got over 2 hours with the Northern Lights, before the clouds came ...

And I am glad, since on my drive into the city for picking up my guests, the viper got broken, so if it should stop to work far away, then iy should be a tricky return drive with bad sight.

So, we just drove around 20 km towards Sommarøy and we had just come outside the bus, when the Lady was active on the south sky with a lovely show ... not the most crazy I have seen, but beautiful.

After checking different cameras around, no one showed better sky, so I decided to stay put where we was ... lit the camp fire and had some hot drink and snack over a better chat with all rest of our night out.

And, sometime you will be lucky out there, since when the Aurora show was over, then the sky got overcast ...

March 16th - Private Aurora Chase Dinner
Four persons on the road under the hazy sky with Northern Lights

  • Guests / Country: 4 guests from Germany and Italy.
  • Weather Tromsø: Cloudy / snow.
  • Destination / weather: Keinovuopio / part clear / haze.
  • Aurora activity: 5/10.
  • Aurora show: All over and towards south, curtains, spikes and curls. A couple of faint coronas, cause haze.
  • Visible for the naked eyes: White and grey.
  • Tour km: 370.
  • Tour hrs: 8.

An no planned delay with success ...

My first plan was to leave the city at 6 pm, but cause too much snow on my driveway (one meter) I didn`t got ready in time for prepare the bus and rest for the dinner chase, so I postponed the leave with 1,5 hours.

And it was just perfect, since while we was heading towards the east I got reports from my colleagues in front; It got overcast and they followed the last hole of clear sky further south far inside Finnish Lapland ...

It`s pity, cause the delay we couldn`t drive so far ... but, when we got 10 km inside the border I gota message from an other colleague, which reported about clearing only 20 km in front of us ...

It`s one of the most popular areas in Finland, Keinovuopio, but we found a nice spot beside my colleague, and just when we had parked and my guests was outside the bus the activity started; So, a very good delay with success.

The dinner making had to wait, since I needed to secure me som pics of Aurora ... and of course; when I served the dinner, then tonight`s best show started ...

Before we returned to the city, as one of the last, I had to give my guests a visit to Sweden too, so we drove over the border river ice, so they hook out three countries tonight ...

March 14th
Northern Lights over the village by the fjord and mountains

  • Guests / Country: 16 guests from Norway, Germany, Taiwan, Hong Kong, China and USA.
  • Weather Tromsø: Cloudy / snow.
  • Destination / weather: Skibotn beach and forest / part clear / haze / cloudy.
  • Aurora activity: 4/10.
  • Aurora show: All over and little towards south, spikes, curls and little dancing in two colors.
  • Visible for the naked eyes: Little green and pink.
  • Tour km: 250.
  • Tour hrs: 7.
  • Wildlife: Two moose.

Tonight it was only one way to drive, far east towards Finland and I was first thinking about to drive the longest I have done this season, all the way to Kelottijärvi 245 km from Tromsø ...

But, the weather forecast was wrong ... again ... and good for us, since it was the best sky in and around Skibotn, only the half way of planned driving distance.

And tonight, I did something I hate to do, stopped on a crowdy parking where all guides was stopping, but sometimes we just have to do so, since the sky was best there, and the activity began just when we arrived ...

After a okey show and happy guests, then we just drove a few km more closer to Finland, up in the forest south of Skibotn, for making a camp fire so I could serve my guests some hot drinks and snacks.

It became little better sky when we arrived, but no activity, and then it got overcast again and it begin to snow, so we just relaxed around the fire in the forest and had some good chats before we left by midnight.

Tonight`s best show probably arrived at 1 am, but then we was inside a "snowstorm" on our drive back to the city ...

March 13th - Private Aurora Chase
Aurora Corona over the trees in moonlight

  • Guests / Country: 11 guests from Germany.
  • Weather Tromsø: Cloudy / snowstorm.
  • Destination / weather: Reinelv / part clear.
  • Aurora activity: 9/10.
  • Aurora show: Far south and east, spikes and curls, and the best corona I have seen for a while, dancing intense in four colors.
  • Visible for the naked eyes: Green, pink and yellow.
  • Tour km: 290.
  • Tour hrs: 7,5.

If I knew, that the sky over Tromsø and the coastal district around should be 90% clear, and that we had to wait closer to midnight before the Aurora began to be active, then I should do Plan B, which I was thinking about ... by postpone the start of the chase with two hours to 8 pm ...

But, I got stuck with Plan A and left my home in full snowstorm at 5 pm ... where I 7 km south was very close to make huge crash with a car which suddenly stopped on a hill, in a curve ... my bus slided when I breaked hard, and I partly passed the car, when I saw why it has stopped; 20 reindeers in middle of the road ... it was very close ...

Picked up my german guests at three location in the city and went south, in a 120 km snowstorm, before we began to see some stars on clear sky ...

My first plan was Senja, but why drive further when we had partly clear sky ... so, 90 km return drive saved.

And then we had to wait, since there was no sign of any activity, but the Aurora forecast showed much activity ...

After two hours waiting and only little green on the camera, we decided to leave at 11.30 pm, but when I had packed all equipment I just shot one pics with my camera ... and suddenly the great show begin ... so, I had to get all of my guests out of the bus ...

And what a show ... first several spikes towards south, and then it climbed above us and created an amazing beautiful and colorful Aurora Corona ... please check the video on Instagram and GG FB page >>

March 10th
Faint Aurora between the clouds over the snowy mountains and dark forest

  • Guests / Country: 16 guests from Australia, Hong Kong, China, UK and USA.
  • Weather Tromsø: Cloudy.
  • Destination / weather: Dividalen valley / part clear / snow / clear.
  • Aurora activity: 2/10.
  • Aurora show: Some spikes and a very strange spreading of a green layer all over the sky.
  • Visible for the naked eyes: White.
  • Tour km: 285.
  • Tour hrs: 7,5.

For the third night in row I was planning for Finland, but after 70 km south I checked our Private Aurora Cams in Dividalen which showed perfectly clear sky, so I change the route ...

Of course, when we arrived it was more clouds than clear sky, but that`s part of the game ... and there was no sign of any activity, so I had to teach my guests the most important tool we have; Patience.

The sky got better after a while, and when the Aurora forecast first planned show didn`t appear at 10.45 pm, then I wondering how this night should be ...

And then we got a quick snowfall with totally overcast sky, so I was very close to escape and drive 70 km back towards the Lyngen Alps where the sky was better ... but, after 10 mins waiting the sky cleared up again, so we stayed put.

Then we got little activity straight up, but only a very faint stripes across ... and then little brighter spikes in west and north ... and then the green was spreading all over the sky ...

The stay out there ended when we got the 2nd wave of a snowfront, just before tonight`s "best show" arrived, so we missed the little better curtains which came on the northwest sky ...

Got to see little more activity on the west sky on our drive back to the city, but nothing worth to stop for ...

March 9th
A couple in the snowy landscape under the sky of Northern Lights

  • Guests / Country: 16 guests from Germany, China and USA.
  • Weather Tromsø: Part clear.
  • Destination / weather: Helligskogen / Finnish border.
  • Aurora activity: 5/10.
  • Aurora show: Several stripes all over, little towards south, curtains, spikes and curls. Little pink dancing.
  • Visible for the naked eyes: Green and pink.
  • Tour km: 310.
  • Tour hrs: 8.

Tonight the Lady was shy and very teasing ... come several times and dissapear quickly again.

We headed towards Finland, but had to stop 15 km before when the activity suddenly got bright ... then we did a couple of stops before we finally arrived nice and clear sky just inside the border.

And since we had spend too long time along the road, and there was no time for a camp fire before it became a late midnight snacks around the fire while we got little more of Lady Aurora`s performance ...

March 8th
A group of people under the sky of colorful Northern Lights

  • Guests / Country: 16 guests from Norway, Switzerland, Taiwan, Australia, China and UK.
  • Weather Tromsø: Cloudy.
  • Destination / weather: Oteren / Helligskogen / Kilpisjärvi / gaps in clouds / part clear / fog / clear.
  • Aurora activity: 8/10.
  • Aurora show: All over and far south, curls, spikes and colorful curtains. Little pink dancing and several coronas.
  • Visible for the naked eyes: Green and little pink.
  • Tour km: 330.
  • Tour hrs: 7,5.

Tonight Lady Aurora was very colorful for celebrate the Womans Day ;)

We went towards the Finnish border tonight, but had to take several stops since the activity was great along the route, but several times the clouds came after us and destroyed the sight, and by the border the fog suddenly destroyed the south view when a colorful show started with deep red color.

Finally we came across the border and had lovely clear sky close to Kilpisjärvi in Finland ... the huge question is why I made so many stops before we arrived the final stop.

The sky was okey clear down in the Skibotndalen valley, but it was too crowdy of too many buses at all places, which I really loathe, so it was only one thing to do; drive further ...

Tonight I had with me two journalists students from Oslo Met; the third group of journalists this season, plus three film teams also are following me out for my chase ;)

Marketing is King !

March 5th
A girl on the road under the sky of the Northern Lights

  • Guests / Country: 15 guests from Hong Kong, Taiwan, Germany, Greece, China and UK.
  • Weather Tromsø: Cloudy.
  • Destination / weather: Storfjord / Helligskogen / part clear / clear.
  • Aurora activity: 9/10.
  • Aurora show: All over and far south, curtains, spikes and curls. Intense Pink dancing and several coronas.
  • Visible for the naked eyes: Green and pink.
  • Tour km: 285.
  • Tour hrs: 7.

Tonight it was only one thing to do ... follow the crowd east towards Finland ...

On the drive south out from the city, our Aurora forecast (not a app) showed the first show should come just before 9 pm, so the huge question was if we could stop for a toilet break or not ... I did, and regret when we continued since the activity started much earlier than I thought ... so, we got to see only little of it in a few gaps ...

But, it was no matter, since The Lady just had started her performance tonight ;)

We headed towards Finland for the best clear sky, but 15 km before the border we just had to stop cause the next show begins on the south sky, but as I heard from my colleagues later ... it was too crowdy further up, so we should probably have probs to find a place to stop ...

So, I set camp, lit up the fire and serve hot drinks and snacks ... but, this was first later, since the activity was crazy good from the moment we stopped ...

And it was a lovely freezing night out with minus 18 degrees ... that`s lovely, since this was probably the first night in two months it has been so cold ...

March 4th
A woman on the bridge in the forest valley under the sky of the Northern Lights

  • Guests / Country: 16 guests from Australia, Hong Kong, Germany, Norway, UK and USA.
  • Weather Tromsø: Cloudy.
  • Destination / weather: Dividalen valley / part clear / clear.
  • Aurora activity: 7/10.
  • Aurora show: All over and towards south, curls, spikes and curtains. A couple of faint coronas.
  • Visible for the naked eyes: Bright green and little pink.
  • Tour km: 290.
  • Tour hrs: 7,5.

Tonight I had a team from NRK - the national TV with me. This chase you can watch here `Norge Rundt` >>

Most of the guides headed further east towards the Finnish border, but again ... I choosed my own path and got to have the whole valley for uself, and that`s just perfect since I prefer silence instead of the crowdy areas ...

We met a "snowstorm" along our drive and when we arrived the valley it was suddenly overcast (!) after our private cameras in the valley had showed beautiful clear sky all evening ...

So, then I learned my guests patience ... since the clouds are moving, and they did it again ... after 10-15 mins we had a lovely clear sky, and then the Lady begin to be active ... such a great cooperation ;)

On our way back to the city, we had to make a new stop 70 km south since the Lady was ready with a 2nd show.

March 3rd
Northern Lights between the clouds above the tiny forest

  • Guests / Country: 16 guests from Australia, Taiwan, Singapore, Germany, Italy and UK.
  • Weather Tromsø: Cloudy / rain / sleet.
  • Destination / weather: Salangen / part clear / haze.
  • Aurora activity: 3/10.
  • Aurora show: Several spikes across the sky, spikes and curls.
  • Visible for the naked eyes: Bright green.
  • Tour km: 390.
  • Tour hrs: 8,5.
  • Wildlife: Two white rabbits (hare) and two moose.

90% of the guides went towards the coast, north of my home on the island Ringvassøya ... and I headed south ... far south ...

Why ?

Just because I prefer snowy conditions instead of pouring rain, and cause I really loathe the crowdy areas where all another guides are driving ... since I am starting later and there will not be so many places to stop, when all are driving in the same direction ... and cause I am selling silence ...

It`s a gambling de luxe of course, and I regret little of my decision when I got reports from my colleagues that they had partly clear sky and got to see the first show at 9.30 pm, while we had one hour more driving to clear sky ...

But, we got little Aurora too at 10.30 pm, the best show for tonight, but we missed a lot of it since our north sky was cloudy, so we got only the west part ...

Long drive for just little, and the night should be longer when the road was blocked of a military truck ... the military exercise `Joint Viking` going on these days ...
