September 30th - Private Aurora Chase

Weather Tromsø: Part clear.
Destination / weather: Sommarøy / Brensholmen / part clear / haze / clear.
Aurora activity: 4/10.
Aurora show: A couple arks across the sky, but faint. Spikes and curtains.
Visible for the naked eyes: White.

Wildlife: Two moose and two reindeers.

I was first planned to drive straight west to Grøtfjord area, but since my guests already had seen that area on a day tour, I changed my plan and headed southwest towards Sommarøy.

Since the evening still has some daylight hours we did a photo stop at Kattfjordeidet valley, and then to my old basecamp and home at Lauklines (2003 - 2008), where we got invited in of my good colleague Marcus, for a good chat and coffee.

And when we contiuned our drive towards Sommarøy it was many other guided tours who headed the same way, so I got worry about to find a place where we could stay in silent ... and I had right, so all places was taken where I liked to stop, but since we only was three we didn`t needed so much space, so I parked in between two another buses on the edge of the road.

And since we went down towards the sea shore, we didn`t saw anything to the other group of people in front us and behind us, but we could hear them scream when the first activity was started ...

After an relaxed moment by the campfire and the first "show" appeared, which was nice and faint, but I got my pics of the bridge and Aurora, then we contiuned our backtrack drive on the longer way, around Kvaløya`s south part.

But we didn`t came far, since I saw some un-forecasted Aurora in the side window on the west sky, so we had to made a new stop, and then we was on a place in the darkness for our self, where we shot a new portion of pics.

Then we contined the drive and since the sky was quiet, it went into a Moose Safari ... and we got what we was looking for; a big baby moose was standing in the ditch and was eating from the trees, and her mother was close by on the field behind some trees ...

Along the drive back to the city we stopped also at the rock carvings at Hella, where I gave my guests the history about when all the Nordic countries was cover of a 2 km tick glacier ... and just before we arrived the city we saw also two reindeers ...

September 25th - Private Aurora Chase Dinner

Guests / country: 3 guests from Singapore.
Weather Tromsø: Part clear.
Destination / weather: Laksvatn fjord / clear / few incoming clouds.
Aurora activity: 8/10. Season best !
Aurora show: All over and towards south, spikes, curls and quick dancing curtains, and a small corona.
Visible for the naked eyes: Green, pink and little purple.
Tour KM: 150.
Tour hours: 6,5.

FULL MOON EQUINOX AURORA SHOW !!

Did the pickup from Steam Pier at Kvaløya tonight, and headed towards east, since the forecast says it should be cloudy in east and west, with a huge gap in between, so then it was only one location which I was thinking about; by the fjord west side of the Lyngen Alps.

The activity was very slim when we arrived with an faint ark low over the fjord in the north, but after my guests had got served the dinner in my own Theatre of Food; A reindeer stew with rice, then suddenly The Lady became more active ...

And such a beautiful show she gave us, with intense colorful dancing, with three visible colors for the naked eyes ... please check the video on GG Insta & FB.

When the activity fainted out we left just before midnight ...

September 24th

Weather Tromsø: Cloudy.
Destination / weather: Grøtfjord / Rekvikeidet.
Aurora activity: 6/10.
Aurora show: All over and far south, curls, spikes and little dancing.
Visible for the naked eyes: White / faint green.
Tour KM: 105.
Tour hours: 6,5.
Wildlife: 5 reindeers.

After a too long and far too late chase the night before, with a return home at 4.20 for my guests, and 5.30 am for me ... it was lovely to make a short drive tonight ...

And since I am starting early, and the evening has still a lot of daylight, I gave my guests a fjords & mountains sightseeing first, so we did some photo stops at Ersfjordbotn and Grøtfjord, before we stopped at my "secret beach" for get pics of the beauty; sunset colors together with Lady Aurora on blue sky ...

The lady started her show early, so just a few minutes after we stopped and had found our each rock to relax on, she became active on super bright blue sky in south east ... and then she turned all over the sky and went towards west too, so I could get the pics I was waiting for; Aurora on the sunset sky ...

Since not all my guests didn`t handle the rocky beach so well in the darkness, I decided to move little, and found a "new location" I never have been stopped at before, along the hilly road up to the plateau Rekvikeidet, where I like to stay since it`s a 360 degrees view over the mountains ... but, there was at least one 50 seats bus up there already, so since I like to give my guests silence I choose to stay away from the too crowdy spot.

Camp fire was lit up, and I served hot drinks and local sweet snacks for my guests, and then the second way of tonight gave us a new lovely one ...

Just before midnight we left, since it was incoming clouds from south ... but, I monitoring the sky and activity via our "private" Aurora cams, since more activity was on the way ... but, closer to the city we got too much clouds, so I ended the chase, just after midnight.

And that`s little pity, since the first good show came at 01.30 am, and even much more later, but then I was at my home 40 km north of the city ...

September 23rd - Private Aurora Chase Dinner

Destination / weather: Finnish Lapland +30 km / part clear / haze / cloudy.
Aurora activity: 3/10.
Aurora show: Just a quick, little bright show across the sky. Faint for the eyes, but colorful on camera.
Visible for the naked eyes: White.
Tour KM: 370.
Tour hours: 9.
Wildlife: 6 moose.

I thought it should be a short chase on the coast, but of course, the weather forecast was totally wrong, and the incoming clouds from south west came fast ... so, we escpaped towards east ...

I was hoping that we could stop at the half way, since our private Aurora cams showed beautiful clear sky, but we had no chance, so we went straight towards the Finnish border, and further ...

When we arrived the Swedish- Finnish border river we had a lovely clear sky, but that should change also there ...

But, my guests enjoyed the environment and magic silence since we was alone there, since most of the other guides had drive further ...

So, I started to prepare the dinner over open fire, and tonight`s dinner on my Theatre of Food, was two dishes; Reindeer stew with rice and a meal of Fish with vegetables.

The clouds and the sky changed every minutes, so in between we got beautiful clear sky and then overcast ... and I got little Aurora on my camera, but it was not visible for our naked eyes ... but, it was going all across the sky, so the question was if something larger was building up ?

Nothing more happened, so I began to pack down my kitchen and was planned to leave at 1 am ... but, in the same second I began to take down my camera, I thought I saw something and there it was ... the stripe across the sky got super clear and strong.

So, I got my guests out from the bus so they also could see it, but it was over quickly as it came, so 30 mins we left ... and on our way back to the city we met six moose.

September 19th

Weather Tromsø: Part clear, fast incoming clouds from south.
Destination / weather: Skardalen, Kåfjord / part clear / haze.
Aurora activity: 3/10.
Aurora show: A couple of arks on teh north sky, spikes and curtains.
Visible for the naked eyes: White.
Tour KM: 320.
Tour hours: 8.
Wildlife: One rabbit, one fox and four moose.

I thought it should be 2x chases at the coast, but the weather forecast changed totally, so we had to escape and head towards east ... first plan was Finland for first time this season, but at the half way it got overcast there too.

So, we drove to the east side of the Lyngen Alps and headed north, for see if we could reach in the front of the cloud front, but after passing Skibotn we got a message from a local in the next fjord, that they had lovely clear sky, so after 160 km the city we stopped ...

But, Lady Aurora was shy tonight, but when my guests are happy for the little we got, then I am happy too ;)

September 18th

Aurora activity: 5/10.
Aurora show: Couple of stripes across the sky, curtains, spikes and a small faint corona.
Visible for the naked eyes: White / little green.
Tour KM: 125.
Tour hours: 7,5.
Space show: Several shooting stars.
Wildlife: One reindeer.

Early start and long daylight evenings, means that I can do a combo a few weeks more, so therefore I bring my guests out to the fjords of Kvaløya ... started with a visit to Ersfjordbotn, 25 km west of the city, and then a new photo stop at Kattfjordeidet Pass for the lake and mountain view.

Then we stopped at Lauklines Kysteferie in Kattfjord, where I gave my guests the story about haw I got to Tromsø for over 20 years ago ... where we got invited in for coffee, by guide Marcus in Explore the Arctic, before we contiuned our drive towards Sommarøy, since the darkness had begin around 8 pm.

And my planned location worked well, since my good colleague Dan in Arctic Experience had stopped in the curve before, so then I got my beach as first planned ... where we arrived just before 9 pm ... but, there was still an hour to wait before tonight`s first Aurora show ...

After checked our very good Aurora forecast, I calcuated it should start around 10.15 pm, but it shown up 10 mins before.

We got an lovely colorful ark across high on the sky, but the colors was only on the camera; Green, purple and red, and since it went so high, I got the picture I was planned to take this evening.

Two hours later the show was over, but it was okey, since the clouds arrived too ... one stop on the return, for check if there was some activity, for shooting some reflections pics in the lake, but it was nothing more ...

September 15th

Destination / weather: Grunnfjord / GGs Camp / clear / part clear / haze / clouds.
Aurora activity: 4/10
Aurora show: All over, but faint and some spikes.
Visible for the naked eyes: White, and little green.
Tour KM: 145.
Tour hours: 8.

After the most lovely sunny day in September, then the clouds arrived from the south, so it was only one thing to do ... drive as far north we could come.

After a photo stop along the route, I decided to drive to a location I am not often cause it`s too busy and crowdy there during the high season ... so, this night we was first at the spot, so we got the best spot, with a lovely view towards north, west and east over the ocean and islands.

And while the Aurora forecast played with us, the clouds came closer and closer ... but, suddenly we got a super clear sky, and of course, just before "the show" started the clouds came back, and it went totally overcast.

Just before midnight, my good colleague Stefan called me from my home place, on his return to the city, and there the sky was partly clear with huge gaps, and it was Aurora activity on the south sky.

So, we just packed quickly and drove fast home to my beach in real Aurora Chasing style ...

We missed of course little of it, but I decided to stay as long we had some to shoot pics, and one hour later we also returned back to the city.

September 14th

September 12th - Private Aurora Chase Dinner

Aurora show: Couple of arks on the north sky, some spikes.
Visible for the naked eyes: White.

Late departure from the city, since I did the pickup from the airport at 8.30 pm and we went straight out, and north towards Ringvassøya island, since the clouds was incoming from SW, and by midnight it should be totally overcast ...

So, I kept contact with my good colleague Trine in Tromsø Friluftsenter who was in front of us, and while she drove to Grunnfjorden, I decided to check out Dåfjord.

When I checked the sky few km before the fjord, the sky was okey and evenings first show began, so we settle down on the plateau, since the sky was 90% clear.

After shooting some pics, I let my guests watching the sky, while I set up my outdoor kitchen and begin to prepare tonight`s dinner; Reindeer stew with rice, all prepared from basic over open fire. It was time for this season first `Theatre of Food`.

We got little more activity, but not better than the first one, and then the clouds arrived as forecasted, so we just relaxed around the camp fire, enjoyed a better meal and had a very good chat ... and I love when my guests have many questions.

The Aurora forecast said it should come something more around 1 am, but we saw nothing ... but, 2.30 am it was probably a better show, but then my guests was back at theirs accommodation, and I was on my way home ...

September 6th

Aurora for myself - on my own beach at Bjørnskar, Ringvassøya island.
I missed the first good one just before 10 pm, but I got the next one with lovely reflections in the fjord.

September 5th

Lady Aurora was sky this night, but my good friend and colleague Marcus and I got a good view to the rocket `Spectrum 2`.

August 28th
