Aurora Borealis activity and weather in Arctic Norway

GuideGunnar's best tip for tour to the magical Aurora Borealis is that you join a guide who will bring you to where the best weather conditions are.

Green and pink Northern Lights over a moon lit landscape and fjord

What is most important to me is that you as a guest shall have the absolutely best possibility to experience what you have come here for; to see the dance of Aurora in the nightern skies.

GuideGunnar tours run in a high quality, warm and spacious 14 seater mini bus with on screen introductions to Aurora en route to the lights. Sometimes we will have to drive further afield, and if we have to stay out on the trail longer because of that, we won't charge you extra for it.

Northern lights finding rate with GuideGunnar is in the high 90s

GuideGunnar logs all Aurora Chase tours.
See all the facts at GuideGunnar's old Aurora Blog (2012-18) and the NEW Aurora Blog from December 2018!
The finding rate for clear sky and Northern lights in winter 2019 was 97,5% and Autumn 2019 was 97%.

The Polar Night

In Tromsø, the sun set for the Polar night at 12:02 pm on November 26th, 2017, for not to be back until 11:25 am for a brief hour on January 15th 2018. This is the polar night. Read the story of The Polar Night – a time of colour at Northern Norway Tourist Board.

Daylight 24/7 and the Midnight Sun

From mid-April to mid-August it`s daylight 24/7 up here in the Arctic. This is why you can`t see the Northern lights, as the sky is too bright. From mid-May to mid-July we have the Midnight Sun. During this time the sun never sets...

Please stay warm! Clothing and gears in the Arctic environment

GuideGunnar offers complimentary warm suit and thermo boots for all guests. Please take up the offer to protect yourself from the cold. Temperatures in Northern Norway in winter is well below freezing point, and can reach -20 degrees Celcius (-4 Fahrenheit) and colder inland. It's imperative that you prepare well, finding the right clothing and that you follow your guide's instructions when out in the cold.

Please read more about how to prepare clothing for the arctic environment on GuideGunnar's Clothing and gears in the arctic environment page.
